Synthetically obtained drug "Oxytocin" ("Oxytocin") is an analogue of the human hormone of the same name produced by the hypothalamus. When administered intravenously, the drug causes an intense contraction of the smooth muscles of the uterus, which allows the widespread use of "Oxytocin" for abortion (medical abortion). Currently, pharmacies can purchase full pharmacological analogues of the drug, produced under the trade names "Syntocinon" ("Sandoz", Switzerland) and "Pitupartin" ("Gedeon Richter", Hungary). At the same time, which medicine to choose, in what concentration and dosage, the doctor decides.
Application of the drug
Usually, "Oxytocin" for abortion is used for up to 12 - 14 weeks. This is due to the physiological characteristics of the development of the fetus - the fertilized egg does not have a strong attachment to the wall of the uterine cavity, and its intense contraction leads to an abortion. In terms of its physiological effect, this procedure is similar to artificially simulated childbirth (induced miscarriage). Medical termination of pregnancy is considered a more gentle method compared to surgical abortion. The drug is used by intramuscular or intravenous administration. The use of "Oxytocin" in pills for medical abortion is ineffective. The active substance of the drug, after oral administration, is partially destroyed in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, "Oxytocin" tablets are prescribed to improve lactation or intensify uterine contractions after a past birth or a surgical abortion.
Intramuscular and intravenous injections of this medication are also ineffective at earlier stages of pregnancy, when the use of more effective drugs "Mifepristone" ("Mifepristone") or "Misoprostol" ("Mizoprostol") is recommended.
The mechanism of action of the drug allows you to provoke a miscarriage at a later date - up to the second (and even third) trimester of pregnancy. Of course, in this case, medical abortion is carried out only after a medical consultation and if there are medical indications, for example, in case of a missed pregnancy or an atypical course of heart development, which poses a danger to the life and health of a woman.
Modern gynecology believes that artificial termination of pregnancy through the use of "Oxytocin" causes less harm to a woman's health than surgical abortion, and has much less negative consequences.
How it works
- If the drug is used in the early stages of pregnancy, then the fetal egg, as a rule, is not able to attach to the uterine cavity. If this nevertheless happened, then its rejection occurs with the release of a small amount of blood.
- The use of oxytocin late in term to terminate a pregnancy causes the cervix to dilate. The result is birth.
- Sometimes the drug is used after childbirth in order to avoid the appearance of inflammatory processes, stagnation phenomena.
How to enter
The introduction of the drug can be carried out in different ways:
- Intramuscular administration. In order to terminate a pregnancy, an injection is made into the cervix. The result of therapy is noted already 5 minutes after the start of the drug administration, but lasts about 3 hours. When using the medication after childbirth, the injection can be injected into the gluteal muscle. The dosage in this case is 0.5 IU.
- Intravenous. Used most frequently. With the introduction of the drug, the uterus almost immediately reacts to it. The duration of the effect is approximately one and a half hours. The drug for this method is diluted in glucose or physical solution. At the initial stage, oxytocin is administered in a small amount, but later it can increase. Introduced from 1 to 3 IU, 10-20 drops per minute.
- Very rarely, specialists inject the medicine under the skin.
It is worth remembering that this procedure cannot be carried out at home. The amount of medicines is selected only by a specialist, based on the patient's condition.
Features of injections
Currently, the use of "Oxytocin" by intramuscular injection in practical gynecology, as a rule, is not provided. Intravenously, the drug is injected only after preparatory therapy, which consists in the use of drugs that promote the opening of the cervix. Moreover, the latter are selected strictly individually, depending on the physiological state of the pregnant woman and individual indications for their use.
In large modern gynecological clinics, infusion pumps are used to terminate pregnancy using Oxytocin - special medical equipment that delivers strictly dosed microportions of the drug into the vein or ensures their administration at certain intervals.
Widespread misconceptions
There is a certain category of “too literate” women who, having read special gynecological literature and having studied many Internet information resources, believe that they have mastered all the basics of obstetrics and can independently resort to early termination of pregnancy using Oxytocin. After such a “therapy”, infertility is not excluded, and the process of artificial interruption without the supervision of a doctor is dangerous to health. Moreover, only certified medical institutions have the right to use Oxytocin for abortion.
Some believe that a worthy replacement for the hormonal drug is "Deaminooxytocin" ("Demoksitotsin" - "Demoxytocin") in tablets, produced by the Latvian pharmaceutical company "Grindeks", after which an artificial miscarriage can occur in the early stages. Despite the fact that Desaminooxytocin has a similar mechanism of action - stimulation of the uterine muscles, it is used only with weakened labor or in the postpartum period, when the process of uterine involution is slowed down in a woman, but not for abortion. Special medical literature describes cases when, due to the low effectiveness of Desaminooxytocin during childbirth, Oxytocin is prescribed after it.
"Oxytocin" - contraindications for use
Before prescribing "" for termination of pregnancy, a woman must undergo an examination without fail. Contraindications for medical abortion are usually considered:
- oblique or transverse arrangement of the fetus,
- narrow pelvis of a pregnant woman,
- diagnosed cardiovascular disease
- the presence of severe forms of gestosis.
In the presence of vile indications, the use of not only Oxytocin, but also any hormonal stimulants for contractions of the uterine muscles is unacceptable. And of course, the use of this medication is unacceptable, after the woman had previously noted individual intolerance to the drug, its analogues and derivatives.
The use of the drug may be accompanied by side effects in the form of nausea, the urge to vomit, sudden pressure surges, and changes in cardiac activity.
