Oxytocin – what you need to know about the drug?

Antipyretics for children are prescribed by a pediatrician. But there are emergency situations with fever when the child needs to be given medicine immediately. Then the parents take responsibility and use antipyretic drugs. What is allowed to be given to infants? How can you lower the temperature in older children? What medications are the safest?

Termination of pregnancy is an extremely difficult process and requires a special approach. To achieve this, experts resort to stimulating the spasmodic activity of the uterus.

For such purposes, only high-quality and time-tested drugs are used, one of which is Oxytocin for abortion.

The effect of this drug is achieved by intramuscular administration. The main feature of its composition is that its structure is similar to the hormone produced by the human body. The medication is taken exclusively in the early stages. Otherwise, performance declines.

Is it effective?

Termination of pregnancy is a branch of medicine practiced since ancient times. Until the beginning of the 20th century, this process took place in combination with various kinds of complications, often leading to death.

And only in the early 1900s, one of the specialists made a discovery - a hormone was removed from the reproductive system of animals that could stimulate uterine contractions, which contributed to the termination of pregnancy.

This hormone was called “Oxytocin”, and until the middle of the century it was used exclusively in its natural form. Closer to the 1960s, scientists (or rather, V.D. Vino) learned to obtain a synthetic copy. After a series of studies, the substance received approval from all higher authorities, which contributed to its introduction into medical practice.

When a synthetic copy of the hormone was introduced into a woman’s body, the muscles of her uterus began to contract spasmodically. Thus, the substance made it possible to achieve the desired result in a short time.

In addition to the above, the drug "Oxytocin" is used in the following cases:

  • with heavy periods (allows you to regulate the menstrual cycle);
  • minimizing the possibility of miscarriage;
  • with vaginal bleeding;
  • with possible spontaneous abortion.

To this day, the drug is used in medical practice and has no worthy analogues.

How does it work?

In order to better understand the principle of action of the drug, it is necessary to delve a little deeper into human physiology. When secreted by the pituitary gland and hypothalamus (brain glands), the hormone oxytocin is produced. After the blood washes the surface of the brain, it retreats down, taking with it the produced hormone.

Thus, it is delivered to the woman’s reproductive system. Having reached the target - the mammary glands and the surface of the uterus, oxytocin begins to stimulate production, which has a high concentration, which, in turn, is necessary for the full functioning of the reproductive system.

Oxytocin also helps achieve a process such as lactation.

As it turned out, this hormone is present not only in a woman’s body. To the surprise of scientists, oxytocin was also found in the male body. This was a little strange, because it is not common for males to give birth and breastfeed. Why is it needed in their body?

Studies examining this issue have shown that oxytocin plays a key role not only in stimulating the reproductive system, but also in promoting mood. In other words, like serotonin, oxytocin is a hormone of joy, necessary for relieving stress and imparting calm.

This is especially important for young mothers. Indeed, during childbirth, as well as after it, women in labor experience severe stress.

When oxytocin is produced, a woman experiences a feeling of calm, which, in turn, is necessary to fully stimulate the instincts of protection and preservation of the fetus.

The fact that labor begins at night is further evidence of the importance of the hormone oxytocin in the reproductive system. Studies have shown that its production increases significantly during sleep. And this happens towards the end of pregnancy.

Application

Most often, the drug is taken intramuscularly, since its composition is very sensitive to gastric juice. Only in rare cases, and for specific disorders, is oxytocin taken orally. In such cases, the effectiveness of the drug is minimized.

During pregnancy, oxytocin is used to stimulate the walls of the uterus, which allows for spasmodic contractions necessary for rapid labor. When one dose is administered, the effect of the drug lasts about three hours. Moreover, the effect is noticeable within 10 minutes. Only a small amount of the drug reaches the fetus, which is not capable of having a negative effect.

After childbirth, the drug is widely used. Thanks to it, healing is achieved after curettage. Bleeding stops - in order to prevent postpartum bleeding, they resort to contraction of the uterus, which is achieved by taking oxytocin.

The drug is indispensable after a cesarean section. By injecting oxytocin into the uterine tissue, when the organ is damaged due to surgery, doctors cause its contraction, which has a beneficial effect on healing.

Many doctors believe that the use of the drug is advisable only to restore and stimulate the functioning of the uterus during pregnancy in order to facilitate the process of childbirth. And it is extremely unacceptable to use it for the purpose of premature birth.

The beneficial effect of the drug is also observed during feeding, when proper stimulation of the mammary glands is necessary. In this case, oxytocin is used exclusively orally, so as not to have a negative effect on the uterus.

Action during abortion

Activation of reproductive activity ahead of time with the help of oxytocin is allowed only if childbirth is impossible due to some reasons, and its delay endangers the life of the mother. Such cases include:

  • early loss of amniotic fluid;
  • no contractions.

Under such circumstances, there is a threat to life for both the mother and the fetus. There is also a high probability that the uterine cavity will become infected.

Oxytocin injections are performed into the cervical area and into the uterine wall. The product can also be used nasally. For intramuscular injection, a dose of 0.5–1 IU is indicated at an interval of 45–60 minutes.

When administering an injection intravenously, the drip method is used at 10–30 drops per minute. The general dose is 1–3 IU. The drug is mixed with 300–500 ml of 5% saline solution.

Contraindications

The use of the drug "Oxytocin" is unacceptable in the following cases:

  • the patient’s blood pressure increases after the curettage procedure;
  • with heavy bleeding there is a possibility of miscarriage;
  • another drug was administered (oxytocin can be taken only after 5 hours);
  • the woman experiences dizziness, loses consciousness or has poor spatial orientation;
  • if there is any doubt that the head will be able to pass through the birth canal;
  • with a transverse position of the fetus;
  • ruptures or scars appeared on the walls of the uterus;
  • with immaturity of the cervix.

During multiple pregnancy, the drug is used with caution. If contractions are too sharp, there is a high probability of damaging the fetal head. It should also be noted that oxytocin impairs a woman’s blood supply, and this makes it impossible to take it in case of shortness of breath.

The use of the drug is possible only after prior consultation with your doctor. Under no circumstances should you prescribe it yourself. The dosage and frequency of administration are also determined by a specialist. Use is possible only in hospital conditions, with constant supervision of medical personnel.
