In the very center of the Georgian capital near buildings of the famous Rezo Gabriadze Puppet Theater there is an unusual architectural statue - incredibly sophisticated clock tower, the construction of which the author (Gabriadze himself) timed to coincide with the thirtieth anniversary of his theater. The grand opening of the tower took place on November 6, 2010, and it immediately fell in love with local residents and tourists. Many people now gather here at noon to watch a mini-show, performed daily by several puppets and lasting only a few minutes.
Rezo Gabriadze recalls: “We built, as in the old days - collecting stones, bricks, some 200-300 years old. As a house collapses, this is how we appear. The whole theater took part in this. The combination of stone and brick gives a warm pinkness.And for four years they put one stone to another, because the stones should be connected like people - out of love, in conflict or hugging. But one way or another, there must be life in it. "
What was not mixed here in the end: Byzantine columns, hand-made tiles, motley stones and bricks, a skewed dial, a 21st century clock showing warped time ... On the roof, above all this chaos of cultural heritage, the tree of life grows - a living catalpa tree, adjacent to two pomegranate bushes.

And once a day, exactly at noon, at the middle level, to a different melody, a painted iron curtain opens and, before those gathered at the tower, "human life quickly sweeps." First, a very young guy and a girl appear, then they act as a young married couple.

The fact that Gabriadze wrote scripts for films such as "Mimino", "Kin-Dza-Dza", "Passport" I don't even mention it - everyone knows it. But not everyone, probably, was aware that the Georgian artist, screenwriter, film director, writer, sculptor also tried in the role of an architect, immediately giving out such beauty in the form of a clock tower.
A special place among the clock towers of different countries of the world is occupied by the Tbilisi Clock Tower, which can be seen while walking through the old city. Unique and unlike any of the existing ones, the Tbilisi Clock Tower rises in the capital of Georgia at the address: st. Shavteli, house 26, adjacent to the famous Rezo Gabriadze puppet theater. The visual appearance of the clock tower captures a unique, very special Caucasian flavor, and the chipping on the clock dial and the noticeably lopsided upper part of the structure, from above which you can see the crown of the greening bush, allows only guessing about the age of this building and the serviceability of the clock mechanism.
However, all doubts about the fidelity of the timekeepers are fluttering, it is enough just to watch the tower clock for a while. Every hour, accompanied by music, at the top of the tower, under the very roof, a special door opens and an angel with golden wings appears. In his hand he holds a hammer, with which he knocks on the bell, fixed on the facade of the tower next to the door. Having beaten off a full hour, the golden-winged angel turns its back, flaps its wings spectacularly and leaves the field of view behind a closing door. But if you find yourself near the Tbilisi Clock Tower at noon or at seven in the evening, you can enjoy an amazing puppet show called "The Circle of Life", played to the accompaniment of a perky Georgian folk song. The performance "Circle of Life" can be seen after the opening of the painted iron curtain of the miniature theater in the central part of the tower. This little play consists of several key scenes of a person's life. The performance begins with a scene with the participation of newlyweds in love. Further - the scene of the birth of their baby, they are happy and sedate. The next scene shows an elderly couple, and then two graves. After four scenes played out, in which the main stages of the life of any person are shown, they are repeated again - symbolizing the inevitable continuation of life and the cycle of time.
Tourists and guests of the city, who have visited Tbilisi for the first time and are not familiar with the architecture of the city, are greatly surprised by the fact that the ancient clock tower, lopsided and even overgrown with bushes, is a very modern architectural object. Hearing about this fact, you involuntarily begin to take a closer look at the clock tower, wanting to find any modern details, in a unique, at first glance, ancient building. Having found them, one never ceases to be amazed at the skillfulness of the implementation of this architectural object, which amazingly complemented the crooked streets of old Tbilisi. It is worth noting that the tower, which looks like a lopsided, flimsy, overgrown with vegetation, was exactly what the author of the project, Rezo Gabriadze, conceived in order to fit it into the architectural ensemble of the old city. However, in fact, a very original building can boast of its strength and monumentality, and a small green garden is specially equipped on its roof, consisting of two pomegranate bushes and a tree of life - a living catalpa tree. To care for this makeshift garden, a special staircase was mounted on the left side of the tower, which allows you to climb to the roof as needed and carry out the necessary garden work.
The idea of erecting a clock tower in beloved Tbilisi belongs to the Georgian art worker, the head of the puppet theater Rezo Gabriadze. For thirty years of its existence, the Rezo Gabriadze puppet theater is known all over the world, but until recently it did not have its own walls in its hometown. Having received a building to equip his theater in the old part of Tbilisi, near one of the oldest churches in Georgia (Anchiskhati Basilica, 6th century AD), Gabriadze set about reconstructing the building. While rebuilding the puppet theater, he began to think about the implementation of another of his projects - the construction of a clock tower. This idea required a special approach, the author's impeccable taste and knowledge of Orthodox shrines, since the clock tower located in Old Tbilisi should harmoniously fit into the flavor of the Georgian city. After lengthy work, the visual appearance of the erected architectural object by Rezo Gabriadze surpassed all expectations. He not only did not violate the landscape of the old street, but also supplemented it, becoming the dominant of the theater and a landmark of the city.
Construction work was carried out for four years, and all the theater employees took part in this process. The Tbilisi Clock Tower is constructed from many unique details, including angular protruding ancient stones and bricks, fragments of Byzantine columns, tiles, a skewed clock face and much more. It should be noted that among the tiles painted by Rezo Gabriadze, the number of which is estimated at several hundred, there is not a single repeating pattern. The building material for the clock tower was brought from the quarries, and was also assembled by the theater staff involved in the process of creating the original architectural object. To find a suitable building material, houses and structures were examined for demolition, and when they collapsed, old bricks, stones and other interesting fragments were collected and then used to create a clock tower. Every detail of the clock tower is well thought out by the author and is not at all accidental. Gabriadze's hand is visible in any constituent element of the structure, which can be viewed over and over again, paying attention to new, previously unnoticed details.

Fires follow the Tbilisi TV tower. The structure, assembled in 1955, burned to the ground, a new one was erected in its place, and in 1994 a fire broke out on it again. This time, the consequences, fortunately, were not so destructive, the transmitting equipment survived, the cables leading to the antennas were restored in a day. Television was returned to the townspeople, and the Tbilisi TV tower on Mount Mtatsminda is still performing the functions assigned to it, plus it also provides the capital with mobile communications. Today it is experiencing its own renaissance.
What to see
The design of the TV tower is very peculiar, the central support stands vertically, two additional ones support it from the side of the slope, thanks to which the structure is not afraid of strong winds. The height of the tower is 275 m, taking into account the mountain, it rises above sea level up to 720 m, ensuring reliable reception of any radio frequencies in Tbilisi and the surrounding area.
The tower was recently repaired, painted red and white, hung from top to bottom with garlands of colored lamps. Now you can admire it at night.

Revaz Levanovich celebrated the 30th anniversary of his theater in an unusual way - he built a clock tower next to the theater, and it was it that was solemnly opened to a brass band with a huge crowd of people.
If earlier Gabriadze was a painter, playwright, sculptor, screenwriter, director, book graphic artist, interior designer, ceramist, mini-monumentalist, then, tirelessly adding to the list of his talents, now he has also become an architect.
The idea to build the tower came from Rezo Gabriadze several years ago. What for? To this question, he answered: "In general, every city should have its own clock tower."
But what can you build next to the true masterpiece - the unique Anchiskhati Basilica (6th century), in the immediate vicinity of which there is a puppet theater? Only impeccable taste and knowledge of Orthodox shrines allowed Rezo Gabriadze to construct a unique architectural object out of a thousand little things, which not only did not violate, but, on the contrary, supplemented the landscape of the old Tbilisi street.
