Shops and boutiques offer a wide range of winter shoes from well-known brands.

We decide: for what purposes is a new thing needed? Walking around the city, walking with children in the park or maybe for an extreme hiking trip?

What should be winter shoes?

In the photo: Graceland women's winter boots

What is the first thing you should pay attention to when choosing shoes for the winter:

  • on the quality of materials;
  • on the sole - it should not let the cold through, not slip and be wear-resistant;
  • winter shoes should preferably have a membrane that protects against getting wet;
  • for modern insulation.

Materials that are used for the production of winter shoes

In the production of shoes for the cold season, they usually use:

  • genuine leather;
  • suede;
  • nubuck;
  • textile;
  • nylon fabric.

Each of these materials has its pros and cons.

Shoes made of genuine leather, of good quality and with water-repellent impregnation, will protect your feet from cold and dampness. However, you don’t need to walk in it all day through puddles and loose snow: in the end it will get wet, and then it will dry for a long time. In such shoes, you can walk along the paths cleared of snow from home to the subway, and then to the office.

A good solution for bad weather is combined shoes, which incorporate rubberized "galoshes". If the outer material of such shoes (suede, textiles, nylon) is treated with water-repellent impregnation, then slush and dirt will not be terrible.

Many well-known manufacturers produce membrane shoes, for example, Gore-Tex. Gore-Tex winter boots provide the most effective protection against getting wet.

Pictured: Gore-Tex Insulated Comfort boots designed for outdoor use in rain, snow and cold

It combines long-lasting waterproofness, optimized breathability and thermal insulation for use in cold weather conditions, making it ideal for a variety of outdoor activities. Water and snow remain outside and do not penetrate inside, while moisture in the form of perspiration can easily come out. Thanks to the thermally insulated lining, the shoes reliably protect from the cold, making them ideal for various outdoor activities.

For example, the very warm and stylish Haglofs Krylbo GT high boots for cold weather combine a Gore-Tex membrane.

Ideal sole for winter shoes

Modern technologies make it possible to create such a sole that combines 3 main qualities at once: it does not let the cold through, does not slip and does not crack from frost and reagents.

If you choose shoes for winter outdoor activities, then pay attention: the sole of such shoes should be thicker than regular shoes, with a deeper tread.

Often, manufacturers supply such shoes with an intermediate insole made of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). It simultaneously plays the role of a heat insulator and a shock absorber. Shoes with such an insole are much better protected from frost.

Also in winter shoes, the patented vulcanized rubber sole of the world leader in the production of soles - Vibram is often used. The composition of its components is impressive, and the tread has a complex pattern - all this makes such shoes very wear-resistant.

Shoes with Vibram soles are chosen by athletes for winter extreme tourism.

The Vibram sole was invented in Italy back in 1937. Shoes with Vibram soles will immediately be noticed on the store shelf thanks to the yellow octagon - a kind of "gold" standard in the world of footwear for all types of outdoor activities.

What kind of insulation should be in winter shoes for sports?

Modern technologies have made it possible to abandon the use of natural insulation, which has been used for centuries in the manufacture of winter shoes - fur and wool.

In the photo: Adidas CW Adisnow children's winter boots with Primaloft insulation

Well-known brands use Thinsulate and Primaloft synthetic insulation in the manufacture of sports winter shoes. These materials with high heat capacity and low weight are expensive. But they save even from the most severe frosts and are not afraid of moisture.

Insulation for winter shoes for the city

For urban winter footwear, natural wool, fur, textiles and sometimes down are used.

For example, women's shoes from the new Rendez-Vous by Giorgio Fabiani winter collection are made from high quality materials. The upper part of the boot top is made of soft double-face - single-layer leather, the front side of which is a suede or smooth surface, and the wrong side is natural fur. An exclusive of the models is the technology by which the lower part of the boots is made.

In the photo: elegant and warm women's shoes from the new winter collection Rendez-Vous by Giorgio Fabiani will be an excellent choice for capricious weather / © Rendez-Vous

The new technology made it possible to combine two layers - leather and natural fur - into one, thereby warming the shoes and making them more durable. The two-layer bottom of the boot protects the feet from cold, moisture and keeps its shape better, while the single-layer upper provides lightness and a soft fit.

Reinforced heels protect Giorgio Fabiani midboots from trampling and getting wet, preventing the suede or leather on the heel from touching the ground.

The welt that connects the sole and the upper is made of genuine leather, not textile, as in the models of other brands. The leather welt protects against wetting, warping and premature abrasion, plus it is less soiled and easier to clean with your usual leather care products.

The sole is made of high quality rubber and has a special tread that prevents slipping and getting wet.

How to combine fashionable shoes and wardrobe

For the city in stores you can find beautiful and practical models of winter shoes. And how to combine fashionable shoes and wardrobe?

Beautiful, comfortable and warm models are presented in the Rendez-Vous by Giorgio Fabiani collection.

Creating a collection, designers used high-quality materials - soft double-face leather, natural wool and fur. The wide range of the collection includes models of woven leather, suede and smooth leather. Practical flats and feminine hidden platform models are cut in such a way that the shoes retain their shape for a long time.

An excellent example of urban casual, combining sport and glamour, are ankle boots and comfortable loose fit trousers.

Even more glamor in the image, where there is a mother-of-pearl texture of the skin on the boots, light fur and an asymmetric cut. Despite the seeming impracticality, it will be comfortable for every day: just do not forget about wool knitwear, warm socks and a short fur coat with a hood - and you will feel comfortable even in cold weather.

In the photo: H&M fur coat, Pinko dress, tights, Calzedonia socks, Loriblu clutch, Rendez-Vous by Giorgio Fabiani shoes / © Rendez-Vous

The trend is shades of green.

Here's another look for winter: pleated skirt, down jacket and knitted jersey - following the trends, do not forget about comfort. A hidden wedge on half boots will allow even girls of short stature to wear a midi length, and a practical down jacket will warm in the cold, even if there is a thin silk dress underneath.

In the photo: jacket, turtleneck, Uniqlo scarf, Zara skirt, stylist property hat, Calzedonia tights, Sonia by Sonia Rykiel bag, Rendez-Vous by Giorgio Fabiani shoes / © Rendez-Vous

It's time to say "no" to black! Light-colored shoes, like these suede ankle boots, are quite viable in our winter conditions, if properly cared for.

The height of the semi-boots is optimal in combination with wide woolen trousers, and woolen socks or stockings worn inside will allow your feet not to freeze. Noble natural shades of metal and unpainted leather are an excellent choice for a working wardrobe.

In the photo: pants, Uniqlo pullover, Diego M sheepskin coat, stylist's own scarf, Calzedonia tights, Marc Jacobs bag, Rendez-Vous by Giorgio Fabiani shoes / © Rendez-Vous

The brightest image of winter: green gloves, brown tights with an ornament, a pumpkin bag and sandy low shoes - shades of autumn nature that will surround you with an aura of warmth and comfort. The height of the gloves and the thickness of the sole, combined with a wool lining and natural fur, will not allow you to freeze even in severe frosts. The leather tassels on the bag echo the fur trim, and the edge trim echoes the decorative stitching on the low shoes.

And in this image, brown, sandy and khaki are set off by a frosty cherry shade bag. Thanks to natural materials and the right cut, things from the winter wardrobe can be warm and beautiful at the same time. Wedge heeled ankle boots protect your feet from icy asphalt while making the silhouette more elegant. A bag with a long strap will free your hands for a cup of hot coffee and hugs, and thanks to its color it will become the main accent of the image.

Despite global warming in the middle latitudes of Russia, there are still many places in the world where winter remains winter. For those who are faced with real frosts, we have revised winter shoes designed for extremely low temperatures.

When buying winter boots for especially low temperatures, the first thing that makes sense to pay attention to is the upper material. His choice is strongly influenced by the intended purpose of the shoe. Take, for example, the frequent alternation of temperatures. This is especially true for auto travelers, because, one way or another, from time to time you have to leave the warm cabin for reconnaissance of the area, and then return inside again. From such movements, snow and ice frozen on the street will melt with a “plus”. And if the top of the shoe is not designed to withstand water, then the insulation will also get wet, which will noticeably affect the comfort of the next “walk”. Rubber boots seem to be good for such a situation, but it is inconvenient to drive a car in them (well, except perhaps a "loaf"). It is better to choose shoes with a fabric or leather upper treated with a good water-repellent impregnation or with a high-quality membrane.

Thermal insert made of natural fur retains heat only when dry. Do not use for long walks

FISHING AND HUNTING
Winter fishing also has special requirements. You have to sit in one place a lot, that is, shoes should be as warm as possible. But at the same time, the fisherman is dealing with water. There is always a risk that the membrane or impregnation will not withstand its direct hit - and the end of the extraction process. Therefore, it is more logical to choose a rubber top that does not get wet under any circumstances. True, since we are talking about severe frosts, rubber must correspond to them - the usual one does not like low temperatures.

But for hunting or long hikes, the upper material does not really matter. The main thing is that the leg feels comfortable when walking. And for this you need, first of all, a well-flexible sole. Moreover, it should bend not only in the store, but also at the temperature of the intended use.

The right thermal pad ensures moisture is removed from the foot and condenses it on the outer surface. The foil reflects heat inward, creating the effect of a thermos

MAIN - DRY!
The material, of course, is the first thing to start with, but not the main thing. The main thing to consider when choosing shoes for the cold season is its ability to remove moisture from the foot. Because it is almost impossible to achieve perfect comfort when it is neither hot nor cold. So, the feet, if not cold, then sweat. And high humidity, even with a short stop, leads to strong cooling. And no heater will save. But if the foot remains dry all the time, then even in not the most insulated boots it will be warm if you move more actively.

And here the most interesting begins. It is clear that it is not so difficult to make fabric or leather boots permeable to moisture from the inside and at the same time protect them from water from the outside. The already mentioned membranes in the composition of the top will cope with this task. But what about rubber? After all, she will not be able to learn to “breathe” under any circumstances. This is where multi-layer structures come to the rescue. By the way, these rubber boots are designed for the most extreme temperatures. And all thanks to the complex internal structure. In the models Kamik Goliath and Baffin Titan with the stated temperature of use, respectively, minus 70°C and minus 100°C, the insulation is made by a separate insert like a felt boot. It works as a moisture collector and draws it away from the foot to its outer surface. There is a foil with micro holes, which condenses moisture, and it flows down to the sole. As a result, the feet stay dry for a long time, and the condensate collects in the grooves on the inside of the sole or under the corrugated insole. Drying such shoes is also easy: the “boot” is removed from the rubber boot and dries pretty quickly. Due to the large thickness of the insulation, thick soles and rubber, walking in them for long distances is inconvenient, but they are perfect for passive stay in the cold.

The model ROKS "Antarctica" is quite close to these products in terms of heat storage. But the building is different. It is a fabric-leather boot, dressed from below in a rubber overshoe. The insulation, as well as the rubber representatives, is made in the form of a removable "boot" and consists of alternating layers of artificial fibrous materials. Outside the insert is covered with a layer of foil. The layer of insulation in "Antarctica" is thinner than that of Titan and Goliath, so they are designed for more active pastime or less frost.

Bare ice is common in winter. Therefore, the sole must not slip.

LIGHTWEIGHT REFINED
If you are a fan of movement - hiking, caravanning, hunting - then massive shoes are not for you. But thin and light does not mean cold. This is confirmed by the Irish Setter SNOW CLAW XT, Columbia TITANIUM BUGABOOT XTM OMNI-TECH, Merrell Winterlude 6 and Snowmotion 6 boots. In these models, insulation is attached to the upper layer. Moisture is removed immediately to the surface of the boot due to the "breathing" outer material - fabric or leather. The water-repellent properties of the models are given by a combination of impregnation and membrane. And yet, despite the similar general principles, the boots are completely different. First, the minimum temperature. For the Irish Setter SNOW CLAW XT, for example, temperatures of up to minus 70°C are declared with active use! The fact is that a rather progressive Insulate insulation with a density of 2000 g / m2 is used there, which allows achieving such a result. Columbia TITANIUM BUGABOOT XTM OMNI-TECH is also quite warm: minus 54°C with active use. But here the Insulate insulation is thinner, “only” 600 g/m2. But Merrell did not go on about fashion. They have their own insulation, which provides the Winterlude 6 and Snowmotion 6 models with heat resistance down to minus 32 ° C at a density of 200 g / m2.

Models with natural fur insulation stand apart. This material holds heat well while dry. But the trouble is that with active movement, the legs become too warm and the fur gets wet. After that, you are doomed to constant movement: the slightest stop - and the cold will immediately get to your feet, and it will be difficult to warm them up without a stove or heater. Natural fur also dries for a long time, even compared to very thick inserts from rubber boots. So these boots are only good for hiking short distances or long quiet sitting by the hole.

HERE IS SUCH HEIGHT ...
Shoes differ in height. In principle, high shoes are preferable for winter to reduce the risk of snow getting inside. But such shoes are less comfortable with active walking. Therefore, some manufacturers make low boots, providing attachments for protective gaiters on them. These are models from Merrell. Columbia, despite the rather high berets, also provides for fastening leggings. But the Irish Setter believes that the height of his model (to the middle of the lower leg) and a snug fit will be enough to protect against deep snow.

The ledge at the back on some models is a ski or snowshoe mount. Very useful thing

Since extreme temperatures do not last all winter even in the Arctic, manufacturers also take care of protection from water. Most often in winter, it is under a layer of snow, that is, the greatest risk of meeting it is at the bottom of the boot. Therefore, often shoes for active pastime are supplied from the bottom with "galoshes" made of rubber or polymer, which completely excludes getting wet. The upper is made of more permeable materials (models ROKS "Antarctica", Columbia TITANIUM BUGABOOT XTM OMNI-TECH, Merrell Winterlude 6 and Snowmotion 6). The decision is justified, since even the best membrane is not always able to cope with the boot getting into a puddle.

Yes, if you prefer boots with a tongue, make sure it's built in. And even better - it was a single whole with berets, forming, as it were, a bootleg. Only in this case there is a chance that water or snow will not penetrate into the shoe through this weakened zone.

PLEASANT FLEXIBILITY
We figured out the top and the insides - it's time to move on to inspecting the sole. This element of footwear must also comply with the conditions of use. If prolonged immobility is expected, it is better to choose a thick and porous sole from the inside - it will freeze longer. But it should be understood that with such a sole you don’t look like much, your legs will quickly get tired. Therefore, for lovers of outdoor activities and running hunting, it is better to choose a sole, albeit not very thick, but allowing the foot to bend calmly. But long stops are not recommended in such shoes - the feet will quickly freeze.

In addition to the thickness, the grip properties of the sole should be evaluated. The fact that snow is deep and loose in winter is not always true. In open areas, it is usually blown away and an ice platform is exposed. The thickness of the snow is small and on the slopes. Therefore, shoes should confidently cling to both ice and uneven ground and be well cleared of snow. Some manufacturers supplement the outsole tread with metal spikes. This is the model of ROKS "Antarctica". Some try to adapt the rubber compound to different surfaces and make the tread pattern as aggressive as possible. For example, the Merrell Snowmotion 6 model has a tread depth of 6 mm and powerful lugs on both the underside and on the side, like off-road tires.

DON'T PASS BY
Each self-respecting manufacturer has its own features that increase the comfort of boots to one degree or another, although this does not affect the main characteristics so much. True, there are models by which it is impossible to pass.

Take, for example, the Irish Setter SHADOWTREK boots. Looks like regular high boots with a fabric upper. The fact that they do not get wet and protect from frost down to minus 32°C is also not surprising. But they are also light, 680 grams each.

Another model that attracted our attention cannot be fully called winter. It is not designed for severe frosts. But, you see, how can a real motorist indifferently pass by rubber boots with the Nokian logo? Even if it's Nokian not Tires, but Footwear. The main thing here is the quality of the rubber upper. The molded construction will not allow breaks and delaminations, the sole stands confidently even on slippery surfaces, and the material itself will withstand frost down to minus 40°C. And the corresponding insert-insulation can be bought separately.

Husky boots ROKS "Antarctica S-162" (2200 rubles)

When the spring coolness is replaced by a cold snowy winter, it's time to think about winter shoes. For men, practicality, comfort and, of course, protection from the cold are more important. But sometimes you have to think about style, especially if your everyday look is a strict suit, which is not suitable for every boots. But whatever your everyday look, first you need to determine the main criteria for choosing winter shoes for men.

How to choose the right winter shoes

Unfortunately, it is not always possible to find practical winter shoes that can be worn for years. The main problem of many winter boots is getting wet, which is unacceptable in cold weather. Raw cold feet are the main cause of colds.

When choosing boots, we often pay attention to their appearance, without thinking about how the sole is fixed, by what method it is stitched, what material the product is made of, and so on.

Winter boots are different, but in the season of slush or ice, the same problems always arise. Important parameters for the selection of good winter shoes for men are the following factors:

  1. In order for the shoes to be warm, fur must be present inside. It is not necessary to look only for natural products. Artificial high-tech fur is a worthy replacement, capable of warming no less than natural fur. Moreover, this option is an inexpensive winter shoes for men.
  2. To increase the degree of protection against moisture, both genuine leather and synthetic analogues are suitable. Leather substitutes are quite capable of retaining moisture on the surface, preventing it from penetrating inside. Suede products are best left for dry winter days.
  3. When buying shoes, pay attention to the thickness of the sole. This is another factor that can protect you from the cold. The thick sole reduces the risk of moisture ingress, retains heat better and does not allow the cold to seep through. The best sole today is considered to be a multi-layer sole made of durable material with a tread pattern.
  4. Sometimes manufacturers indicate on labels or boxes the minimum temperature that the product can withstand. If the weather outside is much colder, then such purchases should be avoided. These shoes won't last long.

Parameters of quality shoes

Winter shoes should first of all warm the feet, so you need to choose high boots. Proper winter boots should cover the ankles.
If you prefer products made from natural materials, then calfskin is the best option. The most unfortunate option among natural materials is pressed leather.

Pay attention to the sole. It is better to give preference to a corrugated sole so that the boots do not slip. It is desirable that the protrusion of the sole is large, with deep grooves. In frosty winter it is not advisable to buy shoes with thin leather soles. This option is suitable only if you almost do not walk, but travel by car. The sole material should be rubber or polyurethane. Sometimes manufacturers use different mixtures of materials. It is because of poor-quality polyurethane that products often get wet, since such material does not withstand severe frost and bursts.

Check the quality of the sole fastening and seams. The sole should not easily move away from the skin, and even more so, form large gaps. If you saw a protruding frozen glue, then this option is definitely not suitable for cold weather and slush. Manufacturers of high-quality shoes attach the sole by vulcanization. Regular firmware needs to be additionally treated with water-repellent materials. For example, the vulcanization method is used by ECCO or Vibram.

Types of materials for winter men's shoes

    Calfskin is the most expensive and wear-resistant material. Warm winter shoes for men are made of thick leather, additionally impregnated with water-repellent agents. Calf leather is very soft. In such shoes, the feet get tired less and feel comfortable. Products made of calfskin are especially suitable for people with large protruding bones on their legs. In shoes made of this material, you will not experience pain.

    Pigskin is not as practical, but with proper care it can also last a long time.

    Suede fabric looks elegant but is only suitable for dry winters.

  1. Lining
  2. If you prefer a man-made material, then you need to choose a special structured material used in branded sports shoes. Such material does not “lose weight” over time, does not allow moisture to pass through and leaves room for air microcirculation.

    If you are a lover of natural fur, it is better to give preference to natural sheepskin. This dense and warm type of fur sags a little over time, taking the shape of your foot. It is better to refuse rabbit or hare fur, as such fur “goes bald” very quickly.

  3. Clasps
  4. The type of fastener completely depends on your everyday look. Laces and Velcro are more suitable for jeans or a sporty style, but classic locks are more suitable for suits.

How to take care of your winter boots

How much the material will be able to protect you depends on skin care. Protective equipment is a must for winter boots. Shoe stores today offer a wide range of different sprays, creams and gels that need to be applied to shoes in accordance with the instructions. Among the products offered, water-repellent sprays are most often used. They are easy to use and give excellent results.

Do not forget about the means that protect products from reagents that are sprinkled on roads in winter. Such products will protect your shoes from white spots that are very difficult to remove.

To be sure to protect your shoes from moisture, coat the seams located on the sole with a water-repellent agent. Also, wax or paraffin can be used instead of such products. This procedure must be repeated 1-2 times a week.

Most often, it is the moisture that gets into the shoes that provokes the appearance of an unpleasant odor. Products must be dried and this should be done as often as possible. Today, stores sell special shoe dryers that fit inside and leave for several hours, or even all night, depending on the model. You can dry boots in other ways, for example, by placing them in a room with a warm floor or not a radiator. The main thing is not to place shoes on a hot battery, so that the rubber materials do not dry out and the leather does not deteriorate. Batteries should be warm.

Attention: Faux leather is very fragile and needs to be handled with care. During severe frosts, the artificial material loses its elasticity, so nothing can be done with it until the material reaches room temperature.

Advice: When buying winter shoes, you need to try them on with a thick toe. In frosty weather, you will definitely want to wear warm socks, or maybe two pairs, in which case you will not be able to comfortably wear shoes due to a lot of pressure.

  1. Material. It must be natural. For example, leather or nubuck. Dermantine is unreliable and cold. Recently, well-known brands have been using new technologies in production, making thermal materials.
  2. Insoles. Warm ones are usually made from sheepskin, felt or fleece. They are soft. Today you can find special thermal insoles.
  3. The sole should be thick, rubber and with a tread. The latter will slow down the sliding.
  4. Internal material. It is desirable that it be natural, but artificial fur is also suitable. It also heats up well. The main thing is that it should not be very thick.
  5. Fastening. The way the upper is connected to the sole determines how warm the boots will be, how well they will protect against moisture and how long they will last. Here we give preference to stitched models, rather than glued ones.
  6. Brand authority. Time-tested manufacturers continue to be popular even in a period of rapidly developing new brands. The quality of the products of the "old" companies has long been known to buyers.
