According to legend, farmers began to make holes in their shoes so that the water would flow out faster and the shoes would dry faster. Over time, perforation lost its functionality and became decorative. You can oppose brogues plaintoe(plain toe - “smooth toe”), that is, shoes on which there is no broaching. Depending on the number of perforations and their location, brogues are divided into quarter brogues, half brogues and full brogues.

Quarter (quarter brogue) have a number of small holes only along the seams.

The history of loafers begins in the 1930s in Norway, when shoemaker Nils Gregorijusson Tveranger created comfortable shoes for farmers based on moccasins and called them "Aurland moccasins" (Aurland is a locality in Norway). The original model soon became in demand in America, and the Spalding shoe dynasty from New Hampshire (USA) began to sew their own versions of Aurlann moccasins, giving them the name "loafer" - "loafer". Loafers are a model invented for lazy people and an idle lifestyle: you do not need to bother yourself with tying your shoelaces, and also feel uncomfortable due to the rigid shape of the boot.

Depending on the decorative elements and the shape of the top, they are divided into penny loafers, buckle loafers, tassel loafers, fringed loafers, Venetian loafers, Belgian loafers and slippers.

In 1934, American shoemaker George Henry Bass added a slitted leather stripe to the popular loafers. When the model entered the everyday life of students, they found their own use for the decor in the form of a strip: they inserted a penny coin into the hole, from which “penny loafers” came from. Perhaps they did this for purely decorative purposes, in order to emphasize the uniqueness and originality of their couple, or maybe the penny coin served as a talisman for good luck.

Buckle loafers appeared in the 1930s, when the Italian designer Gucci complemented the usual model with a snaffle-shaped buckle - parts of a horse harness. Loafers with buckle buckle loafers (buckle - “buckle”) have the second name Gucci loafers after their creator.
